me too. International Issues Statement on the Supreme Court and Roe v. Wade
Safe access to abortions is survivor justice.
While we know that abortions remain legal at the moment, we also know that the Supreme Court’s attack on the right to choose is an indication of a new low for this country, and a part of the predictable conditions of the oppressively patriarchal culture that ‘me too.’ seeks to disrupt. The potential repeal of Roe v. Wade isn’t just about denying legal and safe abortions. This decision, if made final, will open the door to more rollbacks on reproductive justice, including birth control, family planning, and privacy rights. Its rippling effect will be to the detriment of all groups and sectors, and will most deeply impact LGBTQ+, trans, Black and Brown communities, and working-class communities.
Until equal and safe access to abortion becomes federally mandated, we have the responsibility and the power to demand that our locally elected leaders do the right thing.
In the weeks leading up to the final decision, we will see thousands of people at rallies and protests making demands of local and federal government. We will see fundraising and mutual aid efforts working to ensure that this threat doesn’t prevent birthing people from receiving the medical care they need. These actions may seem disparate and disconnected, but they are not. We are part of a unified front that will not secede or rest until body autonomy is a fundamental human right.
A fight for reproductive justice is a fight for survivor justice. And as we look to the fifth anniversary of #MeToo in October, with midterm elections following closely behind in November, we are emboldened to galvanize, organize, and urge our communities to keep this same energy in the name of accountability, freedom, and progress. Stay tuned.
In the meantime, abortion clinics and funds are open and ready to support patients in every state. To find a clinic in the U.S., go to www.ineedana.com. If you’d like to help provide abortion resources, please visit www.abortionfunds.org.
