As the world reacts to the sentencing in the case against Sean “Diddy” Combs, me too. International is holding space for survivors. Those who have spoken out, those who remain silent, and those who are watching with quiet resolve.

The courtroom is only one stage in the long arc of justice. And while this sentence will reverberate across media and public discourse, it must not overshadow the deeper message that the voices of survivors matter, and the courage it takes to speak truth to power is changing the world.

The mere existence of this trial is not incidental; it is the result of decades of survivor-led movements, truth-telling, and collective action. It is a direct outcome of the groundwork laid by those who dared to speak when no one wanted to listen.

In a culture that has too often prioritized power over people, this moment represents a significant shift. However imperfect, it signals that more people are willing to name harm, to believe survivors, and to demand accountability, even when our systems remain flawed or resistant.

No single case defines the fight for justice, and no individual’s fate fully reflects the experiences of countless others who have been harmed, but what this moment has done is remind the world that survivors are not alone, and their voices will not be erased.

There is a pathway forward, and it requires all of us: survivors, advocates, legislators, and everyday people working alongside each other to build and invest in long-term solutions that dismantle the systemic conditions allowing sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) to persist. 

When the noise subsides, we must stay grounded in our shared commitment to safety, dignity, and healing, and forge a future where SGBV is no longer inevitable, but unimaginable. That is the work we are here to do, and it does not end with a headline.
