me too. International Responds to the Sentencing of Harvey Weinstein
PRESS STATEMENT
For Immediate Release
September 24, 2026
Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexual assault, after an overturned conviction and two mistrials. Our thoughts are first and always with Miriam Haley, and all survivors who have come forward, testified, and relived their harm in public so that the truth could be heard. Their courage made this moment possible, and it came at a cost that no sentence can repay.
“This movement did not begin with Harvey Weinstein, and it will not end with him,” said Tarana Burke, Co-Founder & Chief Vision Officer of me too. International. “But we are grateful that the survivors in this case can breathe a little easier knowing that there will be some form of justice.”
More than 80 women have accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault. Over the last six years, we have watched a winding trail of trials, appeals, reversals, mistrials, and retrials, with survivors asked again and again to relive their harm in pursuit of accountability. This sentencing is a step in the right direction, but the path it took to get here exposes the deep flaws in our justice system, and how much survivors are forced to endure when they choose to come forward. It also makes clear why survivors cannot rely solely on these systems for justice and healing, and why this movement will continue to build pathways to both that exist beyond the courtroom.
“The media has often reduced the success of this movement to the outcomes of these high-profile cases, but survivor justice has always been bigger than any courtroom. Every day, survivors are finding community and healing, and our partners around the world are doing the work of prevention and intervention. As we approach ten years since the viral moment that connected survivors around the world, we remain committed to building a future where every survivor has access to healing and justice, whether or not their story ever makes the news.” – Dani Ayers, Co-Founder & CEO of me too.
